Clean and Green Kumbh

Eco-Friendly

The First-Ever Eco-Friendly GREEN KUMBHA MELA

Ganga Action Parivar - an organization dedicated to the restoration and protection of Mother Ganga, her tributaries and the environment - in partnership with Allahabad's NGOs, schools, institutions and ministry, is taking up the "Green Kumbha Initiative". This is a first of its kind program, designed to beautify the grounds of Kumbha and its environs, while protecting the health and well-being of festival attendees. In addition, this program will spread awareness and education about the importance of being "green," thus informing and motivating festivals-goers from all over the world to become stewards of the environment around them.

Tree Plantations

Months before the beginning of Kumbha, Ganga Action Parivar along with local NGOs, schools, institutions and volunteers have been planting, and planning the future planting, of trees and plants throughout the Kumbha grounds and its environs. As these grow, beautiful canopies of greenery will shelter visitors from far and near, fruits will tempt the eye, roots will prevent the erosion of soil, and leaves will offer some 90% of their water back to the environment, adding moisture to the air.

Eco-Friendly Toilets

Working in partnership, the Green Kumbha Initiative will provide portable, eco-friendly toilets for free use by festival attendees. In so doing, sanitation will not only be improved, but lakhs of people and the world press will be educated about the importance and viability of ecologically-sound toilet facilities! After the Kumbha has concluded, the toilets will be repurposed for other festivals and pilgrimages in the Rishikesh and Haridwar regions. They will also be utilized for later Kumbha Melas in other municipalities.

Solid Waste Management

Kumbh Mela is rooted in the mythological story of the churning of the ocean, known as Samudra Manthan, conducted by Gods and demons to obtain the nectar of immortality. In this process, the Mandarachal Mountain was used as a churning rod, and the serpent Vasuki served as the rope. Lord Vishnu took the form of a tortoise (Kurma avatar) to provide a stable base for the Mandarachal Mountain.

Clean Water

To cut down on plastic waste which inevitably litters the grounds, we are helping minimize its use by providing filtered water taps and distributing low-cost reusable water bottles.

Public Awareness Program

A progressive outreach campaign is being organized for the entire Kumbha to educate and inspire all on the importance of protecting the environment. The components of this campaign will include outreach through the media, hoardings and posters, videos and films, street plays, gatherings of renowned faith leaders, special music programs and concerts, and nightly Sangam Aartis.

Distribution of Blessed Saplings

Together we will provide the camps of holy leaders who are participating in our program with 500,000 to 1,000,000 plants and saplings that they can in turn distribute as holy Prasad to their devotees. In this way, the saplings will be constant reminders to the pilgrims of the holy Yatra to the Kumbha Mela, which will in turn increase appreciation for the divine beauty of nature.

Kumbh Smriti Plantation Program

Yatris will be given the opportunity to plant their saplings in or near the Kumbha grounds at the Green Kumbha's Smriti Van (Memorial Garden). They may choose to do so to commemorate their pilgrimage, to celebrate an occasion, or to remember a lost loved one. This will help create more green spaces for future Kumbha Melas, as well as inform people and give new knowledge about the environment around them, as well as the importance of keeping It clean and green.

Public Participation

Yatris, partners, and local residents will be encouraged to participate in efforts to "green" the Kumbha. Volunteers will help direct Kumbha attendees to the nearest sanitary facilities, trash receptacles and water taps. They will also provide polluters with information as to how they may dispose of their waste in more sustainable and attractive ways and help educate all on the importance of the environment and living green.

MAKE YOUR KUMBH GREEN

Tips while in the camp

  • Reduce waste by using reusable products, such as reusable plates and cups, instead of items made of non-biodegradable materials like plastic. Clean drinking water is available to refill your reusable water bottles!
  • Reduce your consumption of plastic and polythene! Try to buy items that are not wrapped in layers of plastic as much as possible.
  • When visiting other areas of the camp or the market, carry your own bags (jhola) made of eco-friendly materials like cloth or jute instead of accepting plastic carry bags.
  • Absolutely refuse to use plastic and polythene bags, refusing them even if someone offers them to you.
  • Always look for a trash bin, which are located throughout the Kumbha grounds, to dispose of your waste properly. If you cannot find a trash bin nearby, HOLD ON to your waste until you find a proper bin to dispose it in
  • Never throw your litter on the ground or into the waters of our sacred rivers! Cows and other animals end up ingesting these materials when they are looking for food, and it eventually KILLS them.
  • Try to save precious water! While brushing your teeth or shaving, turn off the water tap, and try to not waste too much water while bathing.
  • Turn off all lights when you leave a room and try to use them only when necessary.
  • Be vegetarian! The meat Industry is one of the greatest contributors to global warming, water wastage, land shortages, deforestation and environmental destruction.
  • Don't wear clothes made of animal furs or leather or use products made from these materials, as the dangerous, toxic chemicals that are used to produce these items are being dumped by the ton into Ganga and Her tributaries, killing all aquatic life and poisoning the millions who rely on Her water.
  • Don't engrave or paint on any monuments or heritage buildings, but instead strive to keep public places clean and green!
  • Don't spit on roads or public places and educate others to not do so also!
  • Educate others in your household, your workplace, and your community on how to live in a green, eco-friendly way!
  • Don't throw objects from pujas or havans in the river, including flowers and samagri. While these materials are natural and bio-degradable, the sheer number of flowers entering the rivers becomes too much to handle. Instead, put biodegradable materials such as samagri and flowers in the proper bins which will be located throughout the camp.
  • When placing offerings in the Sangam, make sure your offerings are 100% natural and bio-degradable (no plastics!).
  • If your offering is in a plastic bag, make sure to take the offering out of the bag before offering to the Sangam, and recycle the plastic bag. The Sangam is a great purifier, but plastics kill all the life in Her waters and along Her banks!
  • Never use the Sangam, or any other water body, as a bathroom. Instead, use community toilets located in the camp and in the Kumbh Mela grounds.
  • Do not do your laundry in the Sangam, and if you do, do not use detergents. Detergents destroy the oxygen capacity in the rivers, and thus kill fish and stop the river from cleaning itself.
